What is UAE Independence Day?
The Independence Day of UAE or the United Arab Emirates National Day falls on December 2 every year. This day is celebrated every year in UAE to commemorate various emirates’ unification under the federation UAE.
History of UAE National Day:
This day was celebrated on December 2 as a day of the anniversary of the Union between the emirates on December 2 in 1971. Before the formation of the UAE, these emirates were known as The Trucial States. They signed a treaty or an agreement with the British Government and became a British Protectorate. According to this agreement, the emirates need to be protected by the British Government in case of all aggressions. This treaty made the emirates bound to the British Government’s permission before selling or buying any land from any other country. The treaty expired on December 1, 1971, and on December 2, 1971, these emirates united together and formed the federation UAE.
In the beginning, nine emirates were supposed to be part of this federation. Still, because of some land disputes and complications, Qatar and Bahrain backed out. The Union was formed on the combined decision of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan-the ruler of Abu Dhabi at that time and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the then Ruler of Dubai. This decision was made in a village near the Samih border on February 18, 1968.
Sheikh Zayed became the President of the Union. Sheikh Rashid was elected as the Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE. Al Madinah designed the flag, and it was made of four colours. Black was used as a symbol for oil that helped the country transform; green symbolizes fertility, and white and red were the colours from the previously present emirates’ flags.
