Labor Day- a day for the workers and the laborers. It is their day, yes! And do you know when this day was founded? It was based at a time when labors were discouraged and dishonored far more than they are today.

Labor Day Origin:

If we want to know the answer to why we celebrate Labor Day, we have to look back into the 19th century. It was the late 1800s when many American workers were made to work for 12 hours a day, and that too for all seven days of a week. The work was also physically demanding, and guess what? The pay rates were meager. In addition to this, children also used to work and grind themselves in these challenging tasks. The conditions were quite harsh and challenging for American workers. All these demanding conditions and life-threatening experiences compelled the works to hold the first Labor Day Parade. It was in 1882 on the 5th of September. The parade marched from the New York’s City Hall and reached a giant picnic at an uptown mark.

This parade was quoted as “Working Men on Parade” by the New York Times. Around 10,000 people participated in this walk, and it was a way bigger number than the organizers’ expectations. There were shoemakers, cigarmakers, dressmakers, and people from other professions in large numbers in the parade. The best part about this parade was that the attendees risked their jobs as it was not declared an official holiday at that time and joined the march. They signed a petition saying, “Less Work, More Pay,” and demanded an eight-hour workday.

But it took several years, almost 10 to be precise, for it to be declared a national holiday. This happened in 1894 when many workers complained against George Pullman. He was the owner of Pullman Palace Car Company. They did some terrible things for the workers, which ignited their rage, which ultimately forced the government to declare Labor Day a National Holiday.
